Affordable Housing
Housing costs, for both rental- and owner-occupied homes, continue to rise in Dane County. The high cost of housing is problematic for residents struggling to make ends meet, for businesses needing employees, and for schools in providing a consistent learning environment for youth. As the population of Dane County continues to grow, the housing stock has not kept pace.
The Dane County Housing Initiative (DCHI) works to address the shortage of housing. Through its Regional Housing Strategy, municipalities are working together to expedite the development and preservation of affordable/workforce housing. A number of local municipalities have initiated task forces to create housing assessments and plans to address the problem (these can be found on the DCHI website).
Dane County Extension helped to facilitate Task Force meetings for the Village of Waunakee and the Village of Mount Horeb.
